Skype is down. What else is there?
August 16, 2007I finally had the neccessity today to set up a little bit of VoIP action, so decided to try out a few stations running Skype. Worked great when I fired it up yesterday, along with the 5.1 million other users which were reportedly up using Skype last night.
However, there appears to have been some manner of catastrophic failure at Skype, resulting in my not being able to log back in all morning, and not even being able to download the Windows software all day today. I finally was able to log in, and my handy Linux Skype client says I’m one of only 74,000 other people who have managed to log in.
Whoa.
So, as you can imagine, I’m trying to find alternatives to Skype. Looking now at MSN Messenger and Yahoo. Anyone have any other ideas?

Just have some patience. I use it for about two years; this is the first flaw in beeing up of Skype.
Keep it up!
unfortunately nothing as nice as skype…
Check Google Talk
Yeh, stick to Skype. You have come to Skype precisely when there was a major issue. I’ve been using Skype for about 2 and a half years and never had any trouble till today. Normally it is absolutely great. I use both the PC to PC and the PC to phone (and vice-versa) services and all usually work extremely well. I would totally recommend Skype and I do, to anyone.
Stick with it – they will get the problem fixed and you will see how good it is.
i’m sure once they get it up, it’s worth trying. Don’t give up your hopes yet 🙂
So you just logged in today? For some of us Skype is already an essential part of our workflow, so who the hell are you to complain? Jeez. Some of us pay a subscription here.
Here’s an idea for you. Be patient or put your money where your mouth is.
What about aim?
If you happen to have ICQ 5.1 there is an includced “Voice Chat” (free of charge) which should work as an alternative to Skype, as long as their login servers are offline.

Since I started using Skype almost 2 years ago this is the first problem I have ever even heard of with the program. It’s a solid program and one of a kind, especially at the price. If you think you can find something better than I wish you the best. Otherwise just show a little patience and as they said it will be up and running within the next 12-24 hours.
Gtalk dude… use Gtalk. That piece of software appears not to go down at all…
Bummer. Don’t give up on Skkype yet though. The web and online systems sometimes are as tenuous as the East coast power grid. I’ll look out to see what I find as alternatives…

Oh and I thought it was only me that couldn’t log into Skype! For online talking, I use Gtalk (the google product) a great deal. It’s a slim client, stable, but only does one to one calls, no video (yet I presume). For group discussion I’ve used TeamSpeak and Ventrillo, both work pretty well, lesser fidelity than Gtalk and significantly less wonderful than Skype but can be configured for large groups. I hate MSN products as a rule and find Yahoo’s only selling feature is that it does multiples and multiple video chat. My Yahoo account is old so it’s clogged with spam and folks I mostly don’t want to talk to, so I avoid it. Hope that helps!

Hummm… where’d my post go? Anyway, Gizmo Project is supposed to be comparable and some say better than Skype. I like Skype but will try Gizmo at least for now.
Voipstunt is great.
It’s actully cheaper than Skype for calls to landlines and cellphones and has good quality.
And it never failed me, but since I am no expert, it will stay as a personal recomendation.
If you use VoIP under Linux, both Ekiga and Wengophone work fine – at least for me. Both may be a little bit less stable than Skype if running on non-standard hardware, but are slightly cheaper than Skype.
….no idea. is it the first time that skype is in attendance?
